About

About Who I am

My name is Marshall Wheeler, and I am a third generation cable logger.  I was given my first chainsaw at age 15 and have not looked back.

I started working for my father on weekends and, soon after getting my license, began working in the woods every day after school.

By learning the trade from my family, I have over 11 years of experience in cable logging, oxen logging, and the forest industry.

I now own and operate my own cable logging business as a certified New Hampshire logger, using the morals and ethics instilled in me by my father and grandfather.

I have experience working with foresters, large families, private land owners, trusts, etc.

I take pride in my work and strive to see healthy selective timber harvesting practices that can be passed to future generations as they were passed to me.

About What I Do

Cable logging is one of the older, "forgotten" forms of logging in which every tree is cut with a chainsaw, limbs are cut off and cut up, and winch cables are run from the skidder to the tree.

This form of logging is not mechanized, so not every single piece of brush or every tree is cut or smashed.  Having a cable skidder allows me to extract single trees or pockets of trees without bumping into, scarring, or smashing trees that are intended to be left for growing.

It is important to cut limbs off in the woods, cut them up into small pieces, and grind them into the ground by running them over with the skidder to produce wildlife habitat (i.e. homes for rabbits and squirrels, etc.).  This process also stops erosion on hillsides and grinds the seeds back into the earth thus establishing faster regrowth.
